Jimmy Buffett grew up in Mobile, and Mobile is where the permanent exhibition about him will live. The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf opens Son of a Son of a Sailor on 12 September, a 6,000 square foot installation the museum bills as an experience rather than a display case, MusicRow reported on 19 August 2026.
The opening runs across a weekend. It starts on 11 September with Margaritas and Memories, a show at the Saenger Theater featuring Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick, and continues on 12 September with the grand opening and the unveiling of a new bronze sculpture of Buffett. Live music and a nautical mural festival in Cooper Riverside Park fill out the rest of it.
More than 130 artifacts are in the room: handwritten lyrics, his 12-string Martin guitar, his 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame statue, rare concert and recording footage, and a full-scale recreation of Shrimp Boat Sound, the studio he kept in Key West. A gallery of objects sits alongside an immersive concert piece.
The museum treats him as more than a musician, working through his time as an author, sailor, pilot, entrepreneur, adventurer, philanthropist and storyteller. The location carries some of that on its own: the building stands on Mobile's waterfront, across the Mobile River from the yard where Buffett's parents worked at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., and the museum's collection already holds material connected to his grandfather's life at sea.
His name is attached to another building decision this month, in Miami, where the future of a stadium he played is up for a vote. San Francisco has just landmarked a house painted with Latin rock musicians in the same run of rock preservation stories.
Karen Poth, the museum's executive director, said the team spent nearly two years listening, researching and collecting, and does not expect the exhibition to be finished on opening day. "It is a living exhibit," she said. Advance tickets for the exhibition and the museum are on sale now.
