A posthumous Todd Snider album is coming in October. My Second Rodeo arrives Oct. 9 through Thirty Tigers and Aimless, Inc., days before what would have been the songwriter's 60th birthday, and it collects 10 songs he recorded last autumn shortly before his death.
The record grew out of one song. Solid Country Gold, the lead single and now out, was written with Jack Ingram in August 2025 and became the spark for the album that followed. It also carries a completed version of (I Got That) Deja Vu, which Snider wrote years earlier with the late country outlaw Billy Joe Shaver.
He had a specific idea of what he wanted the album to be. It was meant to take country music apart: wry talking blues, gospel rockers, songs about weed, and irreverent passes at religion, class and politics, opening with a retrospective track and following his own vision for a successor to 2025's High, Lonesome and Then Some.
Producer and engineer Joe Bisirri, a longtime friend, and co-producer Robbie Crowell finished the record over the following year. Bisirri described Snider's aim as the sound of country music 10 years from now: familiar tropes dismantled and rebuilt over stretched out, swampy grooves with New Orleans style horns.
The method was as unusual as the intent. Bisirri said Snider was so sure of the feel that he insisted on recording his vocal and guitar first, with no accompaniment and no click track, so that the studio band would have to follow wherever he went rather than the other way around.
Crowell said Snider had a knack for knowing where he wanted to go next musically, and that helping realise that was always left of centre and deeply layered. The album will be issued digitally, on CD and on vinyl, including a limited purple pressing exclusive to Nashville record stores. It sits on the release calendar alongside other country autumn releases, and follows the pattern of posthumous honours like Waylon Jennings getting a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and AmericanaFest setting a keynote talk and a Dualtone Records showcase.
