A Yamaha CS-80 linked to the composer Vangelis sold for a record £401,465

A Yamaha CS-80 said to have belonged to Vangelis sold for £401,465, which The Quietus reported on 12 August 2026 makes it the most expensive synthesiser ever sold through an auction.

The instrument is a prototype and carries no serial number. According to the seller it was Vangelis' first CS-80 and was used on Spiral, his 1977 album. A person based in Athens listed it on the musical instrument marketplace Reverb the previous month, without much ceremony.

The provenance is where it gets interesting, because there is not much of it. No official document of authentication accompanied the sale, and the seller provided no evidence for the ownership claim. What they offered instead was a distinctive cigarette burn on an A key, presented as a mark of the instrument having been part of Vangelis' collection.

Somebody paid £401,465 on that basis, which says as much about the standing of the CS-80 as about the provenance. Vangelis, who died in 2022, used a CS-80 in the production of his best known scores, among them Blade Runner and Chariots Of Fire, and in a 1984 interview called it the most important synthesiser in his career.

Whether he used this specific unit on those soundtracks is not known. The gap between the instrument in the story and the instrument on the auction floor is the whole risk of the purchase, and the price suggests the buyer either resolved that privately or decided it did not matter.

The record price also lands at a moment when the industry that made these machines is arguing about what a machine should be allowed to do.
