Aaron Frazer has detailed a new EP called Corners and shared the single Paint the Picture. The Los Angeles-based singer, best known as co-lead vocalist and drummer in Durand Jones and the Indications, built the record around collaboration rather than a single studio session.
Frazer has two solo albums behind him. Introducing arrived in 2021 and Into the Blue followed in 2024, the latter widening his sound past the retro-soul frame his group work sits in. Corners came out of a different impulse: a desire to make music with friends, peers and collaborators he admires.
The list of people involved is long. Cold Diamond & Mink, Kelly Finnegan, Gabe Roth, Anthony Masino, Mayer Hawthorne, Tommy Brenneck and Blake Rhein all worked on it, which reads as a survey of the current independent soul scene rather than a standard credits list.
The title came from the logistics. Frazer said that as the project progressed he found himself travelling between studios in South Central, Riverside, Pasadena and Lincoln Heights, and that it felt like he was going to every corner of Los Angeles while collaborating with people all over the world.
He describes the making of it as a joy with no pressure and no timing around a grand tour, with no goal other than to make songs he loved with people he loved. Paint the Picture is pitched as a yearner's anthem about taking a chance on love.
Corners runs six tracks: Same Old Game, Paint The Picture, Let Your Love Grow, Back Into The World, Tell Me and It's A Shame. Dead Oceans releases the EP on 30 October, and Paint the Picture gets a 7-inch pressing on Colemine on 13 November with Back Into The World as its b-side. The rnb-soul release sits on the release calendar.
