Afroman answers his cancelled Riot Fest set: the rapper once played through a hurricane

Afroman lost his Riot Fest slot to the weather, and he has made his feelings about it public. The rapper posted to Instagram on Sunday after storms over Chicago forced the festival to rework parts of its schedule, and reached for a comparison from his own touring history.

"I did a show in Hurricane Katrina one time back in my day!" he said, before suggesting that younger performers are quicker to call things off than his generation was. A little thunder and lightning, in his telling, now ends a show.

The rain was real enough. Torrential downpours affected Chicago for much of the weekend, and Riot Fest adjusted its Saturday and Sunday running order to work around it. Some artists had set times shortened or pulled forward, with Tool playing a rare daytime headline slot on Saturday. Others did not get on stage at all, and Afroman was in that group.

His complaint stopped short of a grievance. "I ain't mad at them. They did what they felt they had to do," he said of the organisers, adding that the festival let him keep the full fee, which in his account settles the matter.

That last detail is the part worth reading twice for anyone who plays festivals for a living. A weather cancellation is one of the few moments when a booking contract gets tested in public, and whether an act is paid for a set the promoter pulls is never a given. Afroman saying plainly that he was paid tells other performers something the official announcements rarely do.
