Afternoon Bike Ride warn touring musicians after Stripe froze their merch sales

Montreal trio Afternoon Bike Ride is warning other touring musicians against using the payments company Stripe to process merch sales, after the service flagged the band's account as risky and refunded a batch of card payments from their recent US tour dates without notice.

The band explained on Instagram that Stripe reversed card payments from four shows opening for American Football, in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Nashville, effectively clawing back merch money fans had already paid. Afternoon Bike Ride said their attempts to appeal the decision were met with automated responses that offered no path to a human reviewer.

With the sales reversed, the band asked fans who had bought merch at those shows and later saw refunds appear on their statements to send the money again directly, through Venmo or PayPal, so the group would not be left covering the cost of stock it had already shipped and sold.

The episode lands amid what Afternoon Bike Ride called an already difficult moment to be a touring musician, particularly for a Canadian band crossing into the United States, where visa processing delays and rising tour costs have made cross-border routing more expensive and less predictable than in past years.

Stripe reversed course on August 27, two days after the band went public, agreeing to restore the account and reinstate the disputed payments. Afternoon Bike Ride said they remained frustrated by how the dispute played out. "We're still massively disappointed by their system, only having taken action after we made a big stink," the band wrote, adding that the reliance on automated fraud detection, with no human involved until the story drew attention, put real financial pressure on a small touring act.
