Andy Stott fans have waited a long time for this. The Manchester producer last put out an album of moody, prismatic electronic music in 2021, with Never The Right Time, and Late Loop ends the five years since.
The first track from it is "Something In Mind", featuring the singer Elaine Howley, and it sets the tone for a record that leans on voices far more than Stott's earlier work did.
The making of it was governed by an unusually tight rule set. Late Loop was built with no basslines, no reverb and no effects beyond a single delay unit, which strips away most of what Stott's reputation was made on and forces the songs to carry themselves.
It also came out of a longer process than the release suggests. The project began somewhere closer to experimental drone before Stott decided he wanted it led by songs, and two singers, Alison Skidmore and Elaine Howley, ended up appearing across every track on the eight-song album.
Modern Love releases it on October 30, keeping Stott on the Manchester label that has carried nearly all of his output. The record sits in the same electronic lineage his earlier albums built, and the October date is logged on the release calendar.
