Beatport bans all AI-generated tracks from its platform

Beatport has banned tracks made entirely or mostly using AI from its platform, updating its content guidelines to keep fully AI-generated music off the marketplace. Tracks made with some AI assistance that are still considered human-made will now need to carry a tag flagging that involvement.

The policy follows a deal between Beatport and Beatdapp, a firm that specializes in music fraud detection, which will help flag tracks containing AI before they reach the platform. Any track found to contain banned AI content will be blocked from upload, with rights holders notified.

Beatport pointed to a recent survey of its own users, who are mostly DJs and members of the electronic music community, to explain the move. Sixty percent said they would not play AI-generated music in their sets, and 77 percent said they had a firm preference for human-made music, while only 8 percent said they were open to playing AI-generated tracks and 13 percent said they'd consider it if artists were properly compensated. "There is a difference between a tool that assists human creation and a system that replaces it entirely. Beatport is built on the former," said CEO Matt Gralen.

Co-founder and co-CEO Andrew Batey framed the expanded Beatdapp partnership as a way to give listeners "greater transparency" while "protecting human creativity." The policy lands alongside similar steps from other platforms: Bandcamp banned all AI-made music at the start of the year, and TIDAL no longer pays royalties on tracks made entirely by AI.

The ban puts Beatport ahead of most streaming services on AI policy, and lands at a moment when AI-generated music has become a flashpoint across the wider electronic and dance community that makes up most of the platform's user base.
