Beck releases the single Disappearing Act from the album Ride Lonesome

Beck has put out "Disappearing Act," the third song to surface from Ride Lonesome, which Capitol releases on September 18. NME counted it as his fifteenth studio album and his first since 2019's Hyperspace.

The track sits on acoustic guitar with strings, steel guitar and drums around it, Consequence wrote, ending on a couplet about unlearning what you knew. Clash heard a group performance rather than a solo one, and NME described the recording as an ethereal acoustic piece.

Beck produced the album himself and cut it in Room B at United Studios in Hollywood with Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner, the same players who backed him on Sea Change, Mutations and Morning Phase. Nigel Godrich, who mixed the first two of those, mixed this one.

In a press statement, Beck said a decade had passed since the band last recorded together for Morning Phase. "While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way," he added.

"Disappearing Act" follows the title track, which was also reissued as a duet with Sierra Ferrell, and the single "In the Night." Speaking to NPR earlier this year, Beck tied the record to a stretch of loneliness and to the sense that difficult periods have to be walked through alone. Earlier this year he put out a collection of rarities, deep cuts and covers, and he has also turned up on other people's records.

Ride Lonesome arrives on September 18 and joins the autumn's rock and indie records on the release calendar. A North American tour opens on September 16 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, takes in Red Rocks on October 1, and finishes with a Halloween show in Nashville on October 31, the last of 26 dates by Rolling Stone's count.
