Becky G says the industry rolled its eyes at her música mexicana albums

Becky G says the music business rolled its eyes when she decided to build records out of her Mexican heritage. The singer told will.i.am on a new episode of UPROXX's Visionaries that the reaction came before música mexicana grew into the force it is now, and Consequence carried the interview on 26 August 2026.

"There were a few eye rolls too back then," she said, recalling how she had framed the idea as a passion project she badly wanted to make. By her account she started it, and eight months later música mexicana began bubbling.

The first of the two albums was Esquinas, out in 2023 and built around the meeting point of her Mexican and American identities. It debuted at No. 3 on Billboard's Regional Mexican Albums chart and No. 7 on Top Latin Albums, with 14.1 million on-demand US streams in its opening week.

Encuentros followed in 2024 and reached the Top 10 of the same Regional Mexican Albums chart. Watching the genre climb right after she committed to both projects left her feeling some vindication: she told will.i.am she wants to say she told them so, then added that some things are destined.

Her newest album goes somewhere else again. Baraja Bendita arrived on 14 August and leaves the música mexicana focus behind. She called the record genre-less in the same interview, and said the thing holding it together is that she is the common thread running through all of it.
