Billy Idol will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd American Music Awards and give his first-ever performance on the AMAs stage, CBS and Dick Clark Productions announced on May 14. Idol has appeared at the show only once before, presenting in 2004, and previous Lifetime Achievement Award winners include Diana Ross and Rod Stewart. The ceremony airs live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+, hosted by Queen Latifah.
Dick Clark Productions executives Barry Adelman and Alexi Mazareas called Billy Idol "a true rock legend whose influence has transcended generations and genres," pointing to his stage presence and mark on popular culture as reasons for the honor. He is also a 2026 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, adding a second major recognition to his year. The Lifetime Achievement Award is one of several trophies tracked on award watch heading into the ceremony.
Idol has spent almost fifty years shaping rock music. Between 1977 and 1981 he fronted three albums with the punk band Generation X, and in 1982 he launched a solo career with guitarist Steve Stevens that produced hits like "Dancing With Myself," "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell," "Eyes Without a Face" and "Cradle of Love."
He has kept working through 2026. Idol released the album Dream Into It on Dark Horse Records in 2025 to strong reviews, and this year he put out Billy Idol Should Be Dead, a documentary about his life and career. His AMAs slot puts him on the same bill as Karol G, who receives the International Artist Award of Excellence, and Darius Rucker, who receives the Veterans Voice Award, along with performances from Hootie and the Blowfish, Keith Urban, Maluma and Twenty One Pilots.
Taylor Swift leads all nominees for the 52nd American Music Awards with eight nods, ahead of Morgan Wallen, Olivia Dean, Sabrina Carpenter and SOMBR with seven each, and voting for two categories stays open through the first half hour of the broadcast. Dick Clark Productions said additional performers and presenters would be announced in the coming weeks, so the full shape of the night is still being finalized.
