Musician Bonnie Prince Billy announces a live album and shares London May

Bonnie Prince Billy, the recording name of musician Will Oldham, has announced a live album called Ghosts of American Psychonauts and released a live version of "London May," The Line of Best Fit reported on August 4. The song originally appeared on his 2025 album The Purple Bird and features Samhain drummer London May.

Ghosts of American Psychonauts was recorded at the Pico Union Project in Los Angeles over Valentine's Day weekend last year, with Oldham's touring partners Thomas Deakin on clarinet and down-tuned electric guitar and Jacob Duncan on flute and saxophone, joined by guests including Emmett Kelly, Ryder McNair, Dv DeVincentis and Patrick Shiroishi, plus Dave Ferguson, who produced The Purple Bird, singing on "Downstream." Oldham said the musicians on stage "know how to tell stories" while building the record through repeated live performance with the audience.

"The sound of the record doesn't make any sense, nor does its duration, by standard standards," Oldham said, adding that this lets the album do what he wants music to do: make its own sense.

"Once you've been on the road for years it's undeniable that the road is also home," he added. "The stage and the audience were full of friends and family, and music is where we meet."

Ghosts of American Psychonauts, a country and folk record at heart, is due September 18 via Domino, joining the rest of the fall schedule at the release calendar. Three of its eight live tracks come from The Purple Bird, with the rest drawing on Oldham's broader catalog.
