Boston's debut album gets 50th anniversary reissue with long-lost demos

Boston has announced a 50th anniversary edition of its self-titled debut album, due out in 2027. The announcement came on the album's actual 50th anniversary, August 25, and the reissue will include "long lost" demos that bandleader Tom Scholz used to shop the group to record labels before they were signed.

Scholz, an MIT-trained engineer, famously recorded much of the original album himself in his apartment, modifying equipment and building his own guitar effects to shape the band's signature sound. The demos being reissued have never been released to the public, despite the mythology that has built up around them over five decades.

A press release from Scholz described the process behind the reissue: he "dug deep into his massive archive of recordings to find the long-lost, previously-unreleased demos he famously shopped to the labels before being signed by Epic Records," restoring and remastering them with the help of producer, digital expert and Boston guitarist Gary Pihl.

The original Boston sold 17 million copies in the US alone and produced a string of radio hits, including "More Than a Feeling," making it one of the best-selling debut albums in music history. The reissue will ship as a black double-LP, a limited pearl gold double-LP with a bonus guitar pick and poster, and an SACD hybrid disc, with the demos filling a second LP alongside the original album.

The 50th anniversary edition is available for pre-order now through Impex Records, joining the release calendar as one of rock's bigger reissue events of the coming year, even without a confirmed release date beyond its expected 2027 shipping window.
