Caroline Rose reveals new album "Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall"

Caroline Rose, who uses they/she pronouns, announced a new album, "Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall," due October 23 via their own label, SUCK Records. The announcement came with a new single, "Chow Mein," and John Congleton produced the record.

In a press release, Rose said she relates to characters who are "a little strange," outsiders who often land in awkward situations, and that most of the record's stories are pulled directly from scenes in her own life. She described "Chow Mein" specifically as a story about trying too hard to be cool while everything goes wrong.

The album also includes "Yip Yip Yow," a song Rose had performed live for roughly a decade before finally releasing a studio version in May, which was one of Under the Radar's Songs of the Week. Its eleven tracks also include "Valery (please don't be mad at me)," "Cement Head," "Goddamn Train," "Conversation with Shiv (AKA liquid k song)" and closer "Everything in its Right Place."

"Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall" follows Rose's 2025 album "year of the slug," released exclusively on vinyl and Bandcamp, which itself followed 2023's "The Art of Forgetting" on New West and 2020's "Superstar."

Rose will support the new album on tour this fall, opening for Modest Mouse across North America from late September through late October before a run of European in-store signings and performances at Rough Trade locations in November. The album lands in the release calendar among the rest of the fall's new pop and indie releases from Caroline Rose, with the tour also logged in the tour guide.
