Chaka Khan has released "Curious Subject," the third single from her upcoming album Chakzilla, premiering the song with a live performance on Colors.
The track reunites Khan with pop star Sia and songwriter-producer Greg Kurstin, pairing cutting-edge keyboard work with a four-on-the-floor beat and jazzy undertones that SoulTracks called one of the most compelling arrangements Khan has used in years. Lyrically, the song leans into self-aware introspection, with Khan singing about being watched and dissected: "They tell me, they tell me, they tell me that I'm a curious subject."
For the Colors performance, Khan appeared in an all-black, metallic-bedazzled outfit with cowboy boots, her second appearance on the platform after performing "Through the Fire" last month. "Curious Subject" follows the album's title track and "Boogie's in My Soul," which features Snoop Dogg, as the third preview of Chakzilla.
Chakzilla is due out Friday, September 18, continuing a run of new music SoulBounce called Khan being "twice as nice" on her return to Colors.
"Curious Subject" is now part of the wave of new R&B releases tracked on the release calendar ahead of Chakzilla's September release.
