Charles Kelley put two photographs side by side on Instagram on Monday, August 31: a recent one of himself and his wife Cassie McConnell Kelley in sunglasses out on the water, and an older one from when he was drinking.
"My best filter is just...not drinking," the 44-year-old singer wrote, telling followers to swipe for the older image. He said his wife had once asked whether he ever looked at a photo of himself from before he got sober and thought, who is that guy. This was the one.
He was careful not to make it only about appearance. He wrote that he could go on about the blessings that have come from putting it down, well past looking healthier, but that the picture is a useful reminder of a place he does not want to go back to.
Country peers answered in the comments. Ruston Kelly called the photo a good reminder, Shane McAnally thanked him for sharing it, and Russell Dickerson left a muscle emoji.
Kelley has been open about this before. Lady A postponed its Request Line Tour in 2022 when he entered a rehabilitation facility in Utah for alcohol addiction treatment, and he has credited his wife with the role she played in his recovery; the two married in 2009. His 2025 album Songs for a New Moon deals with finding his way back to himself, setting country writing against 1980s-inspired synth sounds.
Sobriety has been a recurring subject in the format this year, from Phil Collins on three years without alcohol to Brantley Gilbert on the health scare that pushed him sober. More country coverage is on the genre hub.
