Chicago's Marital Bed will release their self-titled debut album December 4, the follow-up to a viral debut single that introduced the five-piece band's whirlwind, left-field take on pop songwriting.
The band is centered on singer-songwriter Charissa Jene Lindquist, who writes out of a small second-floor apartment in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood. The eight-track album is out December 4, and new single "Ghost," out now, mixes jagged guitar lines and melodic detours into something Lindquist has compared to a 1960s girl-group song filtered through an alternate universe.
"Ghost" trades the usual breakup narrative for something stranger: Lindquist said the lyrics follow a young woman who discovers that a powerful man she is having an affair with is connected to a dark, sinister force. "I wrote it after having a vivid nightmare about Elon Musk and Grimes," she said, describing the dream as a subconscious response to news she had been following at the time.
The album's eight tracks run "Real Life Romance," "Our Favorite Game," "Incompatible," "Boys In the Band," "Ghost," "Goodbye," "He or She" and "Simulacrum."
Marital Bed's self-titled debut joins a run of Chicago indie releases building toward the end of the year, with the December 4 date landing well ahead on the release calendar.
