Chubby Checker and Gil Cunningham enter the IEBA Hall of Fame on 6 October

The International Entertainment Buyers Association is putting Chubby Checker and Gil Cunningham into its Hall of Fame, and it has a date and a room: the 2026 Honors and Awards Ceremony on 6 October at The Pinnacle.

The pairing is the point. One inductee is a performer whose record changed how audiences behave at shows, and the other spent nearly four decades deciding which performers get booked, which is roughly the two halves of the business IEBA represents.

Checker's numbers hold up. He has seven top 10 hits on the Hot 100, among them Pony Time and Limbo Rock, and The Twist remains the only recording to reach No. 1 on that chart in two separate runs. He also took the first Platinum Single and the first Grammy awarded to a rock and roll recording, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recently.

IEBA's executive director, Brian Wagner, framed the induction in the language of the people who book him. "Chubby Checker represents something that every talent buyer understands, the extraordinary value of an artist who can connect with an audience," he said, adding that Checker changed how audiences take part in live music.

Cunningham's career is the trade itself. He started as a talent buyer in 1988, and in 2003 joined his wife Liz Cunningham in expanding Neste Event Marketing into talent buying and event production. Live Nation bought the company in 2019 and it became Neste Live!, which now represents more than 125 clients, books more than 900 shows a year, and works with Country Thunder, Country Jam and WE Fest.

The award shelf matches that. He has taken IEBA's Talent Buyer, Event Producer, Festival Buyer and Entertainment Buyer of the Year awards and its President's Award, plus several ACM Don Romeo Talent Buyer of the Year honours, the fifth of them in 2025. He has served as both president and vice president of IEBA.

Barry Jeffrey, IEBA's chairman emeritus and a WME partner, put the case for him in terms of risk. "Great buyers combine knowledge and instinct with relationships, trust and a willingness to take a chance on an artist," he said, describing Cunningham as someone who did that repeatedly.
