Crawlers line up a second EP, Live With This, a month after the last one

Crawlers have announced a second EP barely a month after releasing the first. Live With This arrives on 13 November through Nettwerk, the same label that put out TURN OFF THE TV in August, and the first song from it, Birthday, is already available.

That pace is unusual. The Cheshire band's debut album, The Mess We Seem to Make, came out two years ago, and the ordinary shape of a campaign after a gap like that is one release and a long tour behind it. Two EPs inside three months suggests a band writing faster than the release schedule can absorb.

Birthday is the four-track record's lead song, and it takes on the specific misery of a day that is supposed to be good. Holly Minto has described it as being about the strange sadness of getting older, and about bottling up feelings of disconnection on the one date in the year when you are expected to be celebrating.

"It touches on feeling alone even when surrounded by people, but also finding comfort in knowing this is a shared, generational struggle," Minto said of the song. The resolution, in her account, is turning back towards the small but powerful memories that carry you into the next year.

The band have named Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wolf Alice and Lorde as the reference points behind the writing. Those are three acts that have all handled the same trick at different points, which is making something that feels private land in a room full of strangers.

The EP's four tracks are Birthday, Born Screaming, Dirty Parts of Heaven and Sure of It.

Minto also talked about where the band think they are now, and the answer was less about ambition than about who they are doing it for. "We've come back to that band who started in a shed in Warrington," she said, with more confidence and experience behind them than they had then.
