Dance music record store 3 Phase Records launches in Birmingham

The shop has opened in a Grade II-listed building in the Gun Quarter.

3 Phase Records opened July 4 in a Grade II-listed building in Birmingham's Gun Quarter, stocking house, techno, trance, drum and bass, disco and electronic records across two floors, alongside merch and listening stations, Mixmag reported.

Founder Tom Berry, who had previously sold records online, got the idea after noticing the space at 45-46 Loveday Street sitting vacant earlier in the year. He and his wife built the shop themselves, painting, wiring speakers and building record bins by hand over several months before opening.

"Over the years I've visited record shops across Birmingham looking for dance music and often heard, 'Sorry, we don't stock any,'" Berry told Mixmag. "After 20 years in the same job, I decided to back myself and create Birmingham's only independent dance record specialist."

"Birmingham has such a rich dance music history, and I want 3 Phase Records to become a place where people can find great music," he added, saying he hopes the shop becomes part of the city's dance music conversation. "I'd love 3 Phase Records to become part of that conversation."

The store already hosted a Trance Sessions night on July 18 with sets from Russel Priest, Kyle Fletcher and Paaarty Pigeon, and plans further label takeovers and open-deck nights for new DJs to test material in front of a crowd.
