A special showing of the hour-long documentary "Playing the Changes, tracking Darius Brubeck" is set for 8pm on Monday, September 21, at the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, UK Jazz News reported on August 17. Mark Kermode will host a live Q and A afterward with the jazz pianist and the film's director, Michiel ten Kleij.
Darius Brubeck is the son of Dave Brubeck, and the film traces how his own career carried that legacy forward. "It shows jazz being a transformative music both in Poland and South Africa," Cathy Brubeck wrote of the documentary, adding that it also describes how Darius followed his father's footsteps on social and civil rights issues. The film also features South African jazz musicians who came out of the first university jazz degree course on the continent, a program Brubeck helped start in 1983.
Signed copies of the companion book, "Playing the Changes, Jazz at an African University and On the Road," will be available for sale at the Phoenix on the night.
