Dave Lombardo and Lustmord announce debut album as new project Lustmord Lombardo

Slayer co-founder and drummer Dave Lombardo has teamed up with ambient electronic musician Lustmord for a new project called Lustmord Lombardo. Metal Injection reported on August 11 that the pair's debut album, The Pulse of Atoms, is due out October 2 via Ipecac Recordings, led by first single Paleomagnetic Resonance, released alongside a visualizer video.

Lustmord has spent decades working in dark ambient music, and the two built The Pulse of Atoms around layers of sound rather than song structure. Lustmord said the album resists being placed in "any specific genre" or period, music that could just as easily come from decades ago as "5 years in the future."

He described the record's aims in bigger terms still, calling it "the sound of planets dying or of stars being born," and saying it traces "the birth of the universe and the death of the universe" rather than anything closer to rock and roll. The album was mixed and mastered by Lustmord himself.

Lombardo, for his part, called the collaboration one of the most different projects he has ever taken on. "I'm very proud of this collaboration because it's so different from anything else that I've done," he said, adding of his new partner: "This guy is legendary! He rattles the plaster off of venues."

Preorders are open now, including limited Clear and Smoke vinyl variants, and the seven-track record runs from opener "An Eternal Presence Part I: Unknown" through closer "The Abyssal Deep."
