David Byrne is going on the road this fall with a book rather than a band, mapping a short North American tour built around a presentation on Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up.
The book arrives October 6 in North America through Penguin Random House, and the tour opens the same day at Riverside Church in New York, presented by McNally Jackson. Each evening runs roughly an hour.
The premise of the talk follows the book's own: why promising ideas get overlooked, forgotten or dismissed, and which of those forgotten possibilities might still shape what comes next. Byrne draws his examples from history, science, culture and ordinary life.
There are six dates in all. After New York comes Toronto's Koerner Hall on October 10, presented with the Toronto International Festival of Authors and the bookshop Type Books, then San Francisco's Sydney Goldstein Theater on October 11, the Robert Frost Auditorium in Los Angeles on October 13, Seattle's Meany Center on October 14 and Chicago's Athenaeum Theatre on October 15.
A waiting list is open for tickets, and a hardcover copy of the book can be added to a ticket purchase rather than bought separately.
The book is one of several things Byrne has going. He has teamed with The Brutalist director Brady Corbet on a concert film, and worked with composer Daniel Pemberton on "Let Me Sell You A Dream," a song assembled from Elon Musk quotations for the Alex Gibney documentary Musk, which plays at the Toronto International Film Festival this month. The book dates sit in the tour guide alongside the rock routings running this fall.
