Dolly Parton's office answered the obvious question two days after her death: who decides what gets released now. Her longtime manager Danny Nozell put out a statement saying she had spent the past several years building a project roadmap with a team she picked herself, and that the team intends to finish what she started.
Nozell was careful about the difference between a plan and a product. "Ever the planner," he called her, and he said plainly that many of the projects sit at various stages of development rather than finished, which is not the usual line from an estate in its first week. He also said she worked up until the day she died, and that she loved knowing the work brought people joy.
The other half of the statement was aimed at fans rather than the trade. Nozell asked them to treat the official Dolly Parton channels as the test: unreleased music, products, books, experiences and campaigns that appear there have her personal stamp on them, and by implication anything surfacing elsewhere does not. For a name that already sits on a theme park, a literacy charity and a long merchandise list, that line does real work.
The list that came with it holds the things fans had not heard about. Alongside travel stops, a hotel, a museum, coffee, dolls, jewellery, dog treats and bedding, the team named a Dolly avatar show she had revealed herself in a PEOPLE interview the week before she died, a musical documentary, a biopic, a docuseries, a scripted series and an animated series about Billy the Kid. Details on all of it, the team said, are still to come.
Her health had been in the news before any of this. She missed a Dollywood appearance over health problems, and she died on 25 August at 80. Honours began arriving straight away, including word that the National R&B Hall of Fame will induct her in its 2027 class. What Nozell was doing is a different job: telling a country audience which of the things about to appear with her name on them she actually chose.
