Dud, a short-lived trio John K Samson had in 1996 before he formed the Weakerthans, has had its catalogue released for the first time, The Line of Best Fit reported on August 14. The seven songs, collected as May Not Go (Unrealized Recordings from 1996), were recorded that November with engineer John Sutton, who later joined the Weakerthans himself.
Dud also included drummer James Ash of I-Spy and vocalist and guitarist Mike Koop of The Bonaduces and Cheerleader, with Samson on bass and vocals. The band played fewer than five shows before splitting, and the recordings sat unfinished for decades until they were mixed and mastered by Paul Hodgert at One Friday Music, with ADAT transfers by Lloyd Peterson at Paintbox Recording.
The seven songs capture Dud at a fleeting moment in Samson's career, recorded between his departure from the Winnipeg punk band Propagandhi and the formation of the Weakerthans, the band he would go on to lead for the next two decades. The reissue's artwork comes from Matt Milkowski.
The release is a limited pressing, and every physical order includes a vinyl sticker featuring an original drawing made for the 1996 sessions. All profits go to Islamic Relief's Palestine appeal, which works to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
