Dylan Marlowe has set 6 November for his self-titled second album, out through Sony Music Nashville, and put out a song from it today. In This Boat is the preview, and Marlowe says Michael Tyler brought in the idea for it.
The song is an outlier on the record by his own account. "There's a lot of songs about breaking up, there's a lot of songs about hard times and calling it quits," Marlowe says, "but there's not a lot of songs about times getting hard and figuring it out." He adds that it does not rock like the rest of the album but fits anyway.
The album runs to 13 tracks and Marlowe co-produced it with Joe Fox, who also has writing credits on two songs and a solo credit on Here Lately. Fox is the only name on the record besides Marlowe's that recurs on both sides of the glass.
The writing room was wide. Tucker Beathard, Jameson Rodgers, Brent Anderson and Chris Tompkins all contributed, alongside Zach Abend, who appears on four tracks, Smith Ahnquist on three, and Hunter Phelps, Michael Hardy, Corey Crowder, Jordan Schmidt, David Garcia and Lindsay Rimes across the rest. The closing track, Dishes, is credited to Jeffrey Jordan alone.
The reference points Marlowe names are the interesting part of the announcement. Sum 41, Blink 182 and Eric Church is an unusual trio to put behind a Nashville album, and it puts the record closer to the pop-punk-inflected end of country radio than to the traditionalist one.
The running order opens with No Coincidence, Shotgun Seat and Wrench In My Plans before Call You Mine, She's Havin' A Fire and In This Boat, then runs through Rock The Jukebox, Here Lately, Catchin' Strays, Save A Buck, Death Do Us Part and Mother Of A Memory to Dishes.
Marlowe is on the road this autumn with dates in Oklahoma, North Carolina and South Carolina. The album is listed on the release calendar with the rest of the autumn's country releases, and the label's Nashville operation has been in the news for other reasons, covered in the Warner Records Nashville marketing changes.
