Este Haim scored the film Sunny Dancer, and a new Haim record is coming

Este Haim scored the film Sunny Dancer, out in UK cinemas from August 14, composing alongside collaborator Zachary Dawes, NME reported in an interview published the same day. Haim, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 14, said the film's story of a teenager attending a summer camp for young people affected by cancer connected to her own experience at a diabetes camp as a teenager. "I had a very deep connection to the material because I went to a diabetes camp when I was in high school," she told NME, recalling Camp Conrad Chinnook in California as the first place she felt truly understood.

The soundtrack also includes songs by Jamie xx, Fred Again.., Yeah Yeah Yeahs and CMAT, and Haim told NME she is a big fan of CMAT's live performances, singling out a recent Glastonbury set as "incredible and breathtaking." Sunny Dancer is directed by George Jaques and stars Bella Ramsey, and is Haim's second film music credit released this month, following the Callum Turner-led One Night Only, which she also appeared in on screen.

Asked about scoring as a craft, Haim described working alongside a family band as good preparation for collaboration: she said she works daily with "two other collaborators every day that ends in 'y,'" a nod to sisters Danielle and Alana. She also described her instinct to pack scores with percussion, joking that directors regularly tell her to "rein it in a little bit" on the maracas.

Haim said Haim, the band, are always writing and thinking about what comes next, and that she has found New York newly inspiring after reconnecting with old friends there since her recent move, though she said the band does not yet know what a New York-inspired Haim record will sound like.

Este Haim also discussed her recent marriage to tech entrepreneur Jonathan Levin, and said she wants to enjoy being married for a while before Haim's next studio album takes full shape.
