Fivio Foreign released a new gospel song called Chasin, XXL reported on August 6. The Brooklyn rapper had been teasing a non-secular turn, and the outlet frames the track as a musical rebirth, filming the video in Paterson, New Jersey.
Fivio has spoken about wanting to change since announcing last December that he was entering a rehab facility. "I wanna live and I wanna stop making a lot of dumb decisions," he said at the time, and XXL reports he has since shared his sobriety journey with fans on social media.
In the weeks before Chasin arrived, Fivio teased the gospel turn on social media, describing the run ahead as a biblical one. The song lands in our hip-hop coverage and on the release calendar.
On "Chasin," Fivio raps about his newfound faith directly: "I said I work this, I went to church for this," he raps. "I open the bible and I read the word for the nourishment." He extends the theme in the hook, rapping that he prays "that he keeping me flourishing" and "that use me for encouragement."
Fivio previewed the shift on social media before the song arrived, framing it as an answer to doubters of his range: "When I was taking drill to the next level and change'n the whole ascetic of Drill rap... they told me I wouldn't work," he tweeted in late July. "Now imma show yall how a Gangsta could do a Gosple song."
