Font have announced a new album called American Bully XL and shared its lead single, "Texas". The record follows Strange Burden, which the Austin-founded band released in 2024.
The single is a departure. When Stereogum named Font a Band To Watch two years ago, it filed their music under dance-punk, and the writer's own verdict on the new song is that the description no longer fits at all.
"Texas" is instead a shimmering, stuttering piece that drifts rather than drives, and the comparison drawn to it is Hovvdy, another group that got its start in Austin and built a following on soft edges rather than sharp ones.
That leaves American Bully XL sitting somewhere new for the band. A group known for tension and momentum has led with the least tense song they have released, which is either a feint or a genuine turn, and the rest of the album will settle which.
Font formed in Austin and have since built out from there, and both records now sit in the indie and rock end of the same city's output. No release date for American Bully XL has been announced, and it will appear on the release calendar when one lands.
