Gatta Morta, a new band formed by JD Pinkus of Butthole Surfers, Buzz Osborne of Melvins, Coady Willis of Big Business and Clinton Jacob of Mr. Phylzzz, has surprise-released a debut EP called Burn Witch Burn, The Line of Best Fit, Metal Injection and NME reported. The four-track EP moves between thick riffs and warped psychedelia, with all four members contributing vocals.
Osborne said he came up with the idea for the band while touring last fall and felt he needed to start a project with the other three. "It's always a good time for the world to embrace a new heavy/weird band," he said, calling the result "solidly weird rock music that needs to happen." Jacob said he had long sensed the group would eventually work together after befriending Osborne over shared shows.
"It's been way too long since I got to write a heavy album from scratch with such high-calibre players with such complementary styles," Pinkus said, adding that the band is "just cat scratching the surface" of what it has going on. Willis described the resulting sound as waging "asymmetrical psychedelic warfare in the name of romance."
The EP runs "Taco Bellboy," "Victims of the Universe," lead single "Black Hall" and "Clear Smoke," with a video for "Black Hall" out via Ipecac Recordings. A press release for the record described it as blending "thick, riff-driven heaviness and warped, psychedelic passages" into material that is "simultaneously reminiscent of their previous work and entirely new."
Burn Witch Burn is out now via Amphetamine Reptile Records, joining the rest of the season's rock releases at the release calendar. NME notes the release lands the same year Melvins put out their album Thunderball and Butthole Surfers finally released their long-shelved 1998 album After The Astronaut, their first new album in 25 years.
