GDP has announced a new album, Cross Off Matthew, and shared the song "Island In The Sky" with it. The title puts the rapper's own name in the frame: he was born Matthew Miller, and the album is named after him.
Miller has been releasing music as GDP for close to two decades, which makes the gap in the middle of that run the strange part rather than the length of it. He was off the radar for a long stretch, and this is the first substantial return.
The lane he cut for himself came earlier. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, GDP made skate-rap for Run For Cover, a punk, emo and indie label that was in the middle of helping the emo revival break through at the time, which put a rapper in an unusual room.
His attention then went elsewhere. Miller turned toward film and photography, and the music slowed to a stop rather than ending on a decision, which is a more common shape for a career break than a formal announcement.
Cross Off Matthew brings him back to the New Jersey scene he came up in, sitting between hip-hop and the indie label world he worked inside the first time round. No release date has been announced, and the album will appear on the release calendar once one is set.
