Genital Shame, the solo project of Erin Dawson, has signed to The Flenser and announced a second album, Wellness Plan, The Line of Best Fit reported on August 13. The album follows Dawson's 2024 debut, Chronic Illness Wish, which established an experimental sound rooted in black metal.
Lead single "I Want to Die Before You" was inspired by microscopic footage Dawson found of white blood cells searching for viruses while making the record. "The 'You' in the title refers to both a literal person and a metaphor: the white blood cell," Dawson says, describing the idea of something inside you "voting for your continued, healthy existence" even when you feel you do not deserve it, adding that as beautiful as that image is, "it's still not quite enough."
Dawson's approach draws on a background in music education and classical guitar, treating black metal as a tradition to dissect and reassemble rather than simply repeat. She describes Wellness Plan as "a process of acceptance through images of disappearing."
The ten-track album runs "Replace What I'm After," "Down Titration Strategies," "Spiced Loam," "I Want to Die Before You," "Suicide Wellness Plan," "Nucleus Accumbens Atrophy," "Punished by Rewards," "Gorecki Peace," "Gratitude Meditation" and "Goodbye (I've Left It Open)."
Wellness Plan is due October 30 via The Flenser, and files under metal as Dawson's second full-length in the genre.
