George FitzGerald ends a two-year gap with the single The Ladder

George FitzGerald has released The Ladder, his first new music in two years and the first sign of what he is building next. The London producer last put out records in 2024, when he issued the standalone singles Gild, Incomplete Dreaming and Gleams without attaching any of them to an album. The Ladder arrives on Domino and is presented as the opening of a new chapter rather than another one-off.

The song started away from his usual room. FitzGerald began sketching it during a session with Ghost Culture, a producer and friend he has worked alongside before, at a spot near Glastonbury. He then carried the material back to his own studio in south-east London and finished it there, which is where the arrangement took its final shape.

What comes out of that process is a piece of electronic music pointed squarely at the turn of the millennium. The Ladder pulls on the progressive house textures that dominated club rooms in the early 2000s, and it is built to unfold slowly rather than land its hook in the first thirty seconds. FitzGerald described the pull of that era in plain terms.

"I'm a child of that era, and this track echoes many of the proggy sounds I love from that period," he said, adding that the song builds slowly to an emotional high and does not immediately show its hand.

The release lands after a deliberately quiet summer. Rather than chasing a festival run, FitzGerald played a pair of London headline shows at Colour Factory Garden and Carpet Shop, keeping the scale small while the new music came together. That approach reads as of a piece with the record itself, which is less interested in an immediate peak than in the climb toward one.

The rest of his year is booked around the club rather than the stage. FitzGerald plays an open-to-close DJ set at Phonox in London on 7 November, a format that gives him the whole night to work through, and he has further dates in Brighton and Ibiza before the year is out.
