George Strait has fans reading between the lines after a festival booking was announced with unusual wording. On September 1 the country singer was named a headliner for Boots in the Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico in May 2027, alongside Jason Aldean, Brooks & Dunn, Zach Top and Jon Pardi. Taste of Country reported the announcement.
Two things stood out. Strait rarely joins festival bills, preferring standalone stadium dates with support from artists such as Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. And the announcement post carried a line saying he is returning to New Mexico one final time.
His own social accounts shared that post. No formal retirement announcement has been made, and the outlet was careful to say so, but a final show in one state invites the question of whether final shows in others will follow.
Strait has already retired once, in a sense. He stepped away from full-scale touring in 2014 after The Cowboy Rides Away Tour, then took a Las Vegas residency in 2016 that he returned to annually until 2022, and since 2023 he has played a short run of stadium shows each summer.
He has also said the clock is running. At a show in May 2025 he told the crowd he has maybe five good years to sing his songs, adding that he still loves it as much as he ever did and that his feet do not touch the ground once he walks through the curtains.
Born in May 1952, Strait is 74, with five decades of work, 60 No. 1 hits and a Country Music Hall of Fame induction behind him. He has reported no major health problems, though he has had knee and back surgeries. Several peers have already stopped: Alan Jackson and John Michael Montgomery have retired, and Trace Adkins has hinted his 2026 dates could be his last.
