Getdown Services release second album "Massive Champion"

Bristol duo Getdown Services released their second album, "Massive Champion," on August 14 via the label Breakfast, reviewed by DIY at four and a half stars. Reviewer Sarah Jamieson called the 13-track record "A ridiculous triumph," the latest step for a band that has built a following through relentless touring and a deadpan sense of humor since their 2023 debut full-length, "Crisps."

The album's comic vignettes come wrapped in a wider range of musical backdrops than the band has tried before: album opener "Poor Bannister" rides an unexpected country twang despite being a song about a stranger vomiting on a bus, while "Probiotic" brings gnarly rock and roll swagger to a song about gut health trends. "Stop Living" leans into a funky strut, and "The Radiator" echoes the sound of The Rapture.

The review credited the duo, Josh Law and Ben Sadler, with staying painfully relatable as narrators even as the songwriting grows more ambitious, success that has already carried the band to two headline nights at The Roundhouse. "Massive Champion" follows the singles "Cha Cha Slide" and "I Can't Die Like That," released earlier this year to build toward the album.

Getdown Services will tour the UK in support of the record from November through early December, with stops including Cardiff, Brighton, Norwich, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and Sheffield, alongside a separate run of stripped-back in-store shows.

"Massive Champion" lands in the release calendar among the rest of August's new indie and rock releases from Getdown Services, with the fall tour also logged in the tour guide.
