Alt-pop singer-songwriter Gia Ford has released a new single, Shell, the fifth preview of her upcoming album A Room Within A Room, The Line of Best Fit reported on August 5. It follows earlier singles At Least for Now, God, I Guess My Time Has Come, and How Do I Reply?.
"'Shell' was the result of me moving out of my own way," Ford said of the track, adding that she went into the writing session ready to accept whatever her hands and mind told her to do. She said she was picturing Maria Wyeth, the character at the center of Joan Didion's novel Play It As It Lays, as a visual counterpoint to her own winter reflections from a few weeks earlier.
"It's about that vacant sort of shadow that has followed me throughout my life, and that's why I gravitate towards those characters," Ford said, even though she and Wyeth are otherwise dissimilar in most other ways.
Ford pointed to GoGo Penguin-style drumming and the kind of morbid low drones associated with Scott Walker's later albums as what gives the song its unsettled edge, drawing a sonic line between the alt-pop track and jazz and art-rock touchstones.
