Glenn Donaldson's The Reds, Pinks And Purples detail companion album "True Love Daydream"

The project arrives September 25, written during the same sessions as recent album "Acknowledge Kindness."

The Reds, Pinks And Purples

The Reds, Pinks And Purples, the project of San Francisco songwriter Glenn Donaldson, will release a companion record called True Love Daydream on September 25. The EP was written during the same sessions as the band's recent album, Acknowledge Kindness, which Clash noted had already won further acclaim before this companion record was announced, but is its own release rather than a leftovers collection. Donaldson described it as "a little boat set adrift off the shore of the main album."

The first song to surface from the EP, "Heaven Of Love (Slow Version)," is an earlier version of a track that later became more of a pop song on Acknowledge Kindness. "This was the original version of this song," Donaldson said. "Some of the lyrics and melodies are totally different than the album version."

He explained the decision to rework the track for its parent album: nearing the end of making Acknowledge Kindness, he felt there were too many ballads on it, so he rearranged "Heaven Of Love" as more of a pop song. Even so, he said, "this might be the true form of this tune. The ending is more emotional."

Donaldson described the song itself as resistant to easy explanation. "The song is more feeling than thinking, so it's hard to explain what it's about," he said, "but it's true that sometimes we need to imagine there's an Earthly heaven that's just out of reach."

Donaldson is a key figure in San Francisco's wave of jangly, melodic indie pop, and True Love Daydream extends that same creative period rather than opening a new one. Clash's report gave no indication of a full tracklist or additional songs beyond "Heaven Of Love (Slow Version)" ahead of the September 25 release, which fans can track on the release calendar alongside the band's other recent activity.
