Gnarls Barkley are touring again for the first time in eighteen years. The producer Danger Mouse and the singer and rapper CeeLo Green have announced the To Whom It Still Concerns Tour, which takes them across the United States and Canada this autumn before a run in the United Kingdom later in the year.
The reason for it is a record most people have not yet caught up with. Atlanta, the duo's third album and the one they have described as their last, arrived in March, and this is the first time they have put a live schedule behind it.
Green framed the whole thing in a statement that treats the tour as a piece of programming rather than a nostalgia run, saying the songs "are the silver lining to an otherwise sad story" and inviting audiences to come and celebrate the beautiful madness of it all. For a duo whose best-known song is a pop hit about losing your mind, that is at least a consistent position.
The North American leg opens on 5 November at the Masonic in San Francisco and closes on 28 November at House of Blues Chicago. In between come the Wiltern in Los Angeles, the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, the Fillmore in Detroit, House of Blues in Boston, the Fillmore Silver Spring outside Washington and History in Toronto, with a New York date on the schedule as well. Gallant opens the western and southern shows and Duckwrth takes the eastern ones.
Tickets follow presales with a general North American on-sale on Thursday 24 September at 10am local time, through Ticketmaster, AXS and other outlets depending on the venue.
Eighteen years is a long absence for an act that was, briefly, inescapable. Gnarls Barkley formed in the middle of the 2000s and the two men have worked apart for most of the time since, Danger Mouse producing across most of the guitar and rap music of the last two decades and Green moving between solo records, television and Goodie Mob, who signed on this summer as executive producers of a film called Thomasville.
The dates now sit on the tour guide with the rest of the autumn hip-hop and rnb-soul schedule, in a season that has also brought Benny The Butcher and Harry Fraud back together on a single. If Atlanta really is the last Gnarls Barkley album, this is the only chance anyone gets to hear it played.
