Helena Gao and Shushu share new single lao wai

The song previews her EP Gao Dan Dan, out September 10, and follows her Grammy-nominated work with Zara Larsson.

Helena Gao Shushu

Helena Gao has released a new single, "lao wai [老外]," featuring Chinese underground artist Shushu, The Line of Best Fit reported. Self-produced by Gao, it is the latest preview of her upcoming EP, Gao Dan Dan, due September 10 via After All Recordings and tracked in the release calendar.

The title means "foreigner" in Chinese, and the song is described as a "flighty pop anthem" that gives insight into Gao's own sense of feeling like an outsider, part of a wider EP the outlet says explores her identity.

Gao Dan Dan follows a strong year for Gao. She featured on Zara Larsson's Midnight Sun: Girls Trip earlier this year, co-producing nine tracks on the album alongside Margo XS and MNEK, and picked up a nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording at this year's Grammy Awards.
