Hey Rosetta! have started putting things on the internet again, and both of them point the same way. The band, on indefinite hiatus since 2017, posted a short clip showing someone dusting off road cases in a garage and then wheeling them down the streets of St John's, Newfoundland. The caption is a date: 9.22.26.
That reads as Tuesday 22 September, which means the wait between the teaser and whatever it is announcing is five days rather than months. Road cases being pulled out of storage is about the least ambiguous image a band on hiatus could choose.
A second clip went up a few days earlier and was more oblique. It shows an animation of a broken bowl repairing itself, which matters because the cover of Second Sight, the band's final album, is a kintsugi bowl, the Japanese practice of mending pottery with gold so the repair is visible rather than hidden.
Putting the two together gives a fairly clear picture: a break being repaired in a way that shows the join, and the equipment coming out of the garage. Exclaim stops short of calling it a reunion outright, and the band have confirmed nothing.
What the band are returning with is genuinely unknown. No format, title or run of dates has been announced, and there is no way to tell from the teasers whether 22 September brings a record, a tour, a single show or just another clip.
The hiatus has been long enough to have a shape of its own. Frontman Tim Baker has spent it on solo work, and the band's split has been discussed openly in Canadian press, including Baker's own account of how the album Into Your Lungs ultimately broke the group up.
For a band from St John's, filming the road cases on those particular streets is not incidental. Hey Rosetta! were one of the acts that made Newfoundland audible in Canadian indie rock, and setting the teaser at home is the kind of detail a reunion announcement uses deliberately.
Our indie coverage of returns this year includes Liz Harris reactivating her band Helen and New Radicals coming back after 28 years.
