HXG keep the rage rap energy up on their new song Versus

HXG released a new song called Versus on August 28, and it holds to the sound the pair have traded on since they arrived: heavy production, loud drums and a vocal delivery that sits somewhere between a shout and a chant.

The duo of Meechie and Beno! have been signed to Playboi Carti's Opium imprint for some time, and HotNewHipHop notes that their label boss shouts them out regularly. They sit firmly inside the rage rap corner of the genre, where volume and momentum matter more than intricate writing.

Versus does what the group's catalog usually does. HotNewHipHop's Alexander Cole described it as a track built to send a listener through a wall, the kind of song people put on before a workout rather than one they sit down to study.

Reader reviews on the site put the song at 3.5 out of 5 across four ratings at the time of writing. That is a fairly normal reception for a group whose releases tend to land hardest with the people already inside the Opium orbit.

The song follows RedRum, which the group put out in June, and continues a run that stretches back through their work as Homixide Gang. Versus is filed on the release calendar with the rest of the week's singles.

HXG's corner of hip-hop has been productive lately, with drill and rage acts pushing out short, loud singles at pace. Sleepy Hallow and Kyle Richh took a similar route with their single Fine.
