Ibiza's self-governing council, the Consell d'Eivissa, has put forward proposals that would block any new nightclubs from opening on the island, Mixmag reported, citing Periodico de Ibiza. Vice president Mariano Juan announced the plans during a PIAT (Plan for Intervention in Tourist Areas) plenary session on July 26.
"The proposal aims to contain the existing nightlife," Juan said during the session. "We believe there is already enough nightlife in certain areas and no more licenses should be granted."
Juan said the council doesn't want to see legal nightlife businesses disappear, noting they support thousands of jobs and are part of the island's identity. "There's nothing shameful about them; they're not a problem," he said. "They're part of Ibiza, and we should be proud of them."
A ban on new licenses is already in effect across most of Ibiza's municipalities, with the exception of the hilltop village of San Josep in the island's southwest.
Elena Lopez of the Spanish socialist party PSOE backed the proposal, saying Ibiza "has become one enormous party venue" and that the current model has gotten out of hand, leaving no room for families.
