In Flames headlined Goteborg Brinner festival at Frihamnen on August 22, returning to the city where the band's sound first took shape. Two guests joined them onstage: Trivium's Matt Heafy for "Artifacts of the Black Rain," off 1996's "The Jester Race," and Dark Tranquillity's Mikael Stanne for "Behind Space," a track from In Flames' 1994 debut "Lunar Strain."
In Flames is one of the bands most closely associated with the melodic death metal sound that came out of Gothenburg, Sweden, in the 1990s, a scene built alongside acts like Dark Tranquillity. The band's metal catalog spans three decades, and its early records remain touchstones for the genre.
Stanne's appearance carried extra weight. He actually sang on "Lunar Strain" before founding Dark Tranquillity's own vocal lineup, so his return to "Behind Space" traced a direct line back to the earliest days of the Gothenburg movement. He shared a photo from the night on Instagram the following day, calling it "such an amazing time" and adding, "the emotional hangover is real."
The band's 20-song set pulled from across its catalog and included "Gyroscope," played live for the first time since 2012, alongside staples like "Colony," "Deliver Us" and "Take This Life."
The performance comes as In Flames prepares to join Trivium on the road this fall. Trivium announced a 32-show North American headline run in July, with In Flames serving as direct support for the entire trek alongside Frozen Soul, Fit for an Autopsy and Orbit Culture on various legs. The tour begins November 5 in St. Petersburg, Florida, and will also mark the live debut of material from Trivium's yet-to-be-detailed eleventh album.
