Iron Maiden's 'Wasted Years' single turns 40

Iron Maiden's "Wasted Years" single turns 40 this week, marking a turning point that helped shape the sound and imagery of the band's Somewhere In Time era.

Released August 25, 1986, "Wasted Years" was written by guitarist Adrian Smith during the band's grueling 1984-85 World Slavery Tour, a stretch so exhausting it left him homesick enough to write about it. But the song ultimately pushes back against nostalgia rather than wallowing in it. "Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years," Bruce Dickinson sings, urging listeners instead to "realise you're living in the golden years."

The single's artwork, drawn by longtime Maiden illustrator Derek Riggs, leaned into the era's fascination with time travel, arriving the same decade as The Terminator, Back to the Future and Doctor Who. Riggs gave the band's mascot, Eddie, an origin year of 2050 and a destination of August 25, 1986, the single's release date, surrounding him with smaller screens replaying earlier Maiden album covers.

That artwork set the stage for Somewhere In Time, released the following month, where Riggs reimagined Eddie as a cyborg wandering a neon cityscape indebted to Blade Runner. The album leans into similar themes throughout its tracklist, from opener "Caught Somewhere In Time" to "Deja-Vu," where Dickinson repeats the line "Feel like I've been here before."

Somewhere In Time also marked a shift within the band. The rest of the group rejected all of Dickinson's submitted material for the record, a notable tension given his public stance against synthesizers just two years earlier, in the band's 1984 live video Behind the Iron Curtain. Synths open the album regardless, the first sound a listener hears on the record.

Forty years on, "Wasted Years" remains one of Iron Maiden's most enduring singles, a rare Maiden song built less around historical battles or literary references than around the band members' own exhaustion and the strange comfort of looking forward instead of back.
