Singer-songwriter June McDoom has signed to Jagjaguwar and detailed her debut album, Follow The Light, The Line of Best Fit reported on August 4. She also released the album's lead single, "Without You," which pairs live drums with a dub bassline and shoegaze-leaning swells.
"I wrote 'Without You' about that feeling of realizing how meaningless life can feel without the person you love," McDoom said of the track. "I wanted the arrangement to reflect the emotional journey of that realization," she added, saying the song's ending is meant to celebrate never taking a loved one for granted.
McDoom developed the songs with her partner Evan Wright by stacking parts over time and keeping the arrangements minimal. Follow The Light merges reggae, dub and indie folk, drawing on her father's DJ sets growing up and her grandfather's work keeping rural Jamaican acoustic folk music alive. The 12-track album runs "Human Angel," "Without You," "Outside The Window," "Forever," "Get Out Of My Life," "Grandpa," "Dream Dub," "Memory," "Mountain," "Searching To Find," "Weaver" and the title track.
Ahead of the album, McDoom plays two London shows, including an intimate set at Rough Trade West following her performance at End of the Road Festival next month, before a run of North American tour dates this autumn and winter that opens with an album release show in Boston. Follow The Light is due October 16 via Jagjaguwar.
