Jhene Aiko has reached the top of the Billboard 200 for the first time, nearly thirteen years after she first appeared on it.
Westside Whimsy entered the chart dated 26 September at number one with 74,000 equivalent album units in the United States over the tracking week ending 17 September. It also topped Billboard's Top Streaming Albums chart, which is where the bulk of the number came from: 70,000 of the 74,000 units were streaming equivalents, generated by 71.33 million on-demand plays. Traditional sales added 3,500 and track-equivalent activity the remaining 500.
The route to the summit has been a long one. Jhene Aiko first charted with Sail Out, which peaked at number eight in 2013. Souled Out reached number three the following year, Trip landed at number five in 2017, and Chilombo came closest in 2020, debuting at number two with 152,000 units and going on to a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Westside Whimsy is her sixth top ten project.
It is also her first full-length in six years, and it arrived with almost no warning. The album was formally announced three days before it came out on 11 September, which makes a number one debut on 74,000 units a considerable result for a campaign with no runway.
The 20-track record leans on guests from her own end of Los Angeles. Kendrick Lamar appears on So Good, Ab-Soul on Love Bomb, Tyga on Like, Whatever, Larry June on Neighbors, and OHMA closes the album on Golden Coast.
