Jlin has collaborated with the Chicago-based ensemble Third Coast Percussion on a new album, Vernacular, marking the first joint release from the two acts. The record, set for release Oct. 23 via Rockwell Records, blends Jlin's electronic footwork production with Third Coast Percussion's live percussion work.
Vernacular features original compositions by Jlin and Sonnen Zimmer alongside interpretations of Philip Glass' Mishima and David Longstreth's Butterfly Dancing Over a Barrel. The collaboration follows Third Coast Percussion's own interpretations of Jlin's music in recent years, including covers of her songs "Derivative" and "Soulfood."
The pair will debut Vernacular live at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art on Oct. 15, ahead of a European tour that includes a stop at London's Barbican on Oct. 31.
The project continues Jlin's history of pushing footwork's rhythmic language into unexpected settings, following past collaborations with composers including Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet on her 2024 album Akoma. Third Coast Percussion, for its part, has built a reputation for reworking music from outside the traditional percussion repertoire into its own arrangements.
Lead single "Premonition" is streaming now as the first taste of the record, ahead of Vernacular's full release next month.
