Just Penelope, the Bloomington, Indiana trio of Ella Curiel, Ethan Cantrell and Drew Goforth, have released "Sister," the opening track from their debut EP, Great Lake.
Great Lake arrives September 18 through Angel Tapes, the emerging-artists imprint of Fire Talk Records, on digital, cassette and CD. The four-song tracklist runs "Sister," "Copenhagen," "Great Lake" and "After," and Bandcamp lists the record under tags that include rock, indie and noisegaze.
The band formed out of Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, and its name came from a joke: while trying out adjective-noun combinations, Curiel latched onto "Penelope" alone, and Cantrell said the band could not just be "Penelope." "Just Penelope" stuck.
"Sister" follows a run of singles that introduced the band's sound over the past year, starting with 2025 indie rock debut "June, July," inspired by a real scraped knee Curiel got after skateboarding alone in defiance of her parents, and continuing through "Be Gentle" and February's "Feel So." Across those songs, the trio has leaned into a raw, lightly grunge-inflected version of indie rock built on minimal-mic recording and unpolished takes.
More new material is expected from the band as the Great Lake release date approaches.
