Matt Pond PA's Learn How To Lose video features actress Kate Walsh

Matt Pond PA has shared a video for "Learn How To Lose" starring actress Kate Walsh, ahead of the October 9 release of the album Permanent Change Part 1, SPIN reported on August 13. The song began as a basement demo Pond sent upstairs to his wife and songwriter Anya Marina, who returned it with revisions that helped him find what he calls "the celebration inside all my regrets." He traces its sound to "a steady diet of Elliott Smith and Steely Dan."

"The older I get, the less I think this life is about being richer or more famous than anyone else," Pond said. "It's about making your stupid songs, giving them everything you've got, letting go of the rest, and being grateful if someone decides to sing along."

The video was directed by Scott Coffey and shot by Chase Pierson at Utopia Studios in Bearsville, New York, where much of the album was recorded. Walsh appears alongside the children of Pond's longtime friend Mike, who played guitar in Pond's first band; Walsh and Pond previously worked together on the video for "No More Tragedies," filmed remotely while she was living in Australia, making this their first time shooting together in person. "I'm a massive fan of Matt's (and Anya's!) music," Walsh said of the collaboration.

Pond describes the video as capturing the feeling of perpetually auditioning, whether for a role, a relationship or a job, before eventually letting that pressure go. Permanent Change Part 1, which he calls "an endless, fading summer afternoon," is about embracing imperfection and no longer worrying about measuring up.

The single sits within indie and the release calendar ahead of the album's October 9 release.
