Kevin Spencer, a founding singer of the SOLAR group Dynasty, has died

Kevin Spencer, one of the founding members of Dynasty and a quiet architect of the sound that made SOLAR Records the centre of early 1980s soul, has died. SoulTracks reports that he had been fighting cancer, and that the news was carried first by his longtime friend and former co-writer Ricky Smith of Morris Day and the Time. The label context matters for placing him. Detroit owned soul music in the 1960s and Philadelphia in the 1970s, but by the early 1980s the hottest address in the genre was Los Angeles, where Dick Griffey's SOLAR Records took over the charts with a roster running from The Whispers to Shalamar to Midnight Star. Spencer was inside that machine from the start without ever being its public face.

He was part of Dynasty's original lineup alongside the singers Nidra Beard, who died in 2023, and Linda Carriere, working closely with the producer Leon Sylvers III and with Griffey himself. A vocalist, keyboardist and bassist, he helped establish the group with I Don't Want to Be a Freak (But I Can't Help Myself), I've Just Begun to Love You and Adventures in the Land of Music, three records that still turn up in any serious account of the period.

His writing reached further than his own band. He co-wrote Shalamar's early hit Take That to the Bank with Sylvers, and worked as a songwriter and studio musician on records by other acts in the SOLAR family, The Whispers and Shalamar among them, through the label's strongest years. Shalamar's lead singer Howard Hewett posted that Spencer's contribution to building the SOLAR dynasty across the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was invaluable.

Carrie Lucas-Griffey, a SOLAR singer and part of the label's management team, issued a statement on behalf of the label. "Kevin was a multi-talented musician and songwriter, who played keyboards, bass," she wrote, describing him as a lead singer who often sang background on other legendary groups' albums, and noting that SOLAR was a boutique label where Griffey hand-picked every artist and treated them as family.

The connection to Dynasty outlasted the label. SoulTracks covered the group's comeback song Escape in 2020 and its reunion single I Can Tell the following year, both of which brought Spencer back together with fellow original members for the group's first new recordings in many years. For a musician whose name sat in credits rather than on marquees, still being in the room forty years later says something.

Spencer was never as widely known as the stars whose records he helped build, which is the usual fate of the people who write and play on hits rather than front them.
